60 Series Ball Valve-2

Designed for Reliability and Low Maintenance

Here at Swagelok Bristol we most commonly deploy the 60 Series Ball Valve in challenging process applications where higher flow, larger tube sizing (1/2" -2") and a broad range of operating parameters exist. Industries such as Chemical, Refining and Nuclear are regular users of these products. Recently our team went to Swagelok Aberdeen for a Europe-wide collaboration and training with Sam Dibert, President of Swagelok Dibert Valve and Fitting Co. Sam Dibert gave a demonstration of a more varied range of uses for this valve. In this article we bring you an overview of the 60 Series and other applications this valve can be used for.

In terms of environmental cost, well-engineered valves with a proven lifetime longevity can support both environmental and safety requirements.

Performance and Design

Stem

There are several key features of the 60 Series ball valve that differentiate our design versus a traditional ball valve. The common issues with ball valve design that Swagelok have addressed are stem and seat leak performance, versatility with various end connection interfaces, namely threaded, flanged or welded and ensuring superior performance over a wide range of system pressures and temperatures.

Robust seat sealing is accomplished by combining reinforced PTFE with additional seat support and a coned-disc spring. A reliable stem seal is achieved by a two-piece chevron packing live-loaded with Belleville springs. Safe operation is ensured through employing a grounding spring and blow out proof stem, to name just a few features that set it apart.

Reliable Seat Seal

The most important difference that Swagelok utilises in the design of the 60 Series is a unique coned-disc spring, live loading the seat to compensate for seat wear, pressure and temperature changes. Achieving live-loading of the seat assembly reduces seat wear from pressure surges and seals regardless of flow direction. Finally a support ring in front of the seat protects against seat bulge, premature wear and deformation.

Equally as important to the seat seal is how the 60 series achieves a reliable stem seal. There are two elements that are critical to creating the seal. Swagelok utilises a two-piece chevron designed packing, enabling more of the torque that is applied to the packing nut to be distributed to the contact area with the stem and the body of the valve which is essential for sealing. The packing is backed up by a pair of Belleville springs to apply a consistent load on the packing creating a live-loaded stem assembly. The result? Long, trouble-free service over the life of the valve.

Special Application

No valve is right for every situation so it is worth thinking about the types of applications where the 60 Series might be considered. There are many different uses for this valve, and with slight changes to the material, handle type etc it can fully optimised. The 60 Series valve can be upgraded for application requirements such as:
  • All Welded W60T
  • Chlorine Service C60V (Chlorine, Low-temperature or Rapid Cycle Service).
  • Low Temperature Service L60 Series
  • Rapid Cycle R62
  • Steam Service S60P
  • Thermal Service T60M Series
  • Fire Service A60T Series
  • Test Valve Assembly TVA Series
